The European Union and Russia agreed, Monday, that the peace plan proposed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan was still the best chance for solving the crisis in Syria. According toEuropeanCouncil PresidentHermanVan Rompuy, who was visiting Russia:"We agree that theAnnanplanas a wholeprovidesthe best opportunityto end thecycle of violencein Syria."

His statement came at a news conference afterhe metwith Russian PresidentVladimir Putin. Van Rompuy said the two countries had to work out other differences of opinion regarding the Syrian situation.
