Cities and municipalities may use state funding to hire non-orthodox rabbis, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has ruled. The rabbis will be referred to as “non-orthodox community rabbis” in order to avoid confusion.

The decision will have no effect on Jewish legal (halachic) rulings made at the city or state level, Weinstein said. Such decisions will continue to be made solely by orthodox rabbis.
