Ministers Endorse 'Always on Thursday' Independence Day

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation unanimously endorsed, Sunday, a bill by Member of Knesset Lia Shemtov (Yisrael Beytenu) to make the official observance of Independence Day take place on the Thursday of the week in which the 5th of Iyar falls. In explanatory notes to the measure, MK Shemtov wrote that despite the experience of the first Independence Day, which fell on the Friday before the end of the British Mandate, the leaders of the country did not take the possibility of the anniversary falling on a Friday or Shabbat and the law was amended in case of Independence Day falling on those two days.

Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov, who heads the Ministerial Committee on Ceremonies and Symbols, said that the purpose of the proposal is to allow bereaved families to plan and prepare more easily for Memorial Day [the day before Independence Day -ed.] and Independence Day events, make the most of the work week and avoid desecration of the Sabbath."
