Iran's Intelligence Ministry said over the weekend that it had thwarted an attempt in 2007 to kill President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. A statement said that the assassination had been set to take place in a southeastern province of the country when Ahmadinejad was visiting. Three terrorists affiliated with the Jundullah had planned to shoot Ahmadinejad while he was speaking. “But the plot was uncovered and intelligence and police forces intervened to prevent the terrorist attack,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Jundullah is a Sunni opposition group operating from Pakistan that has taken credit for numerous attacks against Iranian officials and institutions. Iran has at times accused the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, Pakistand, and Britain of sponsoring the group. In 2010, the U.S. State Department placed Jundullah on a list of terrorist organizations.
