The Saudi Gazette reported on Saturday that Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has sacked a senior cleric after he decried cautious reforms in the world's top oil exporter that allowed women to mix with unmarried men. The Crown Prince Nayef recommended that a decree be issued to relieve Sheikh Abdulmohsen al-Obeikan of his position as royal adviser following his opposition to the government, which follows a pattern where senior clerics who oppose Saudi Arabia's cautious social reforms too publically are fired from their positions. Obeikan recently attacked the Saudi government for changing the position of women in Saudi society in a radio interview.
