Susan Rice: Too Early to Call Syrian Cease Fire Failure

United Nations ambassador Susan Rice of the United States said, Thursday evening, that it was too early to put the "failure" level on efforts by former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan at a cease-fire between government and opposition forces in Syria. Interviewed by Reuters, Rice said, "Although we've been skeptical of the Syrian government's readiness and willingness to implement its commitments, what Annan is trying to do makes eminent sense and we support it."

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said, Thursday, that according to the appraisal of American intelligence forces, the Al-Qaeda international terror organization has a presence in the country, but the scope of Al-Qaeda's activities is not clear. Panetta said, "We must continue to do everything to determine what kind of influence they have."
