Lone Candidate to Take On PM at Likud Convention

Likud activist Gilad Ariel filed paperwork on Sunday for candidacy as chairman of the Likud convention, set to take place Sunday night. Ariel, a member of the Manhigut Yehudit faction and a member of the Likud Central Committee, is likely to be the only candidate running against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for the job, after MK Danny Danon announced that he would not run for the position, as he had planned. Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Ariel said that he decided to run when he heard that Danon had dropped out, and that by his running, he would ensure that the Likud remained democratic.

Netanyahu is expected to announce at the convention that he is planning to disband the Knesset, and will call for new elections to take place in early September.
