An explosive device detonated, Friday, next to a crowded market in the Bajur region of Pakistan, close to the Afghan border, killing 16 and wounding at least 40, according to the Associated Press.

The blast was apparently intended to target a police checkpoint. Five of the dead were local members of the security forces.
