Bereaved Families: Move Memorial Day by One Day

A week after Memorial Day, bereaved families from across the country have gotten together and organized a petition to the Israeli government, calling it to cancel the overlap between Memorial Day and Independence Day.

Liora Tamir Chouraqui, sister of pilot Lt. David Tamir who was killed along with nine other soldiers during the War of Attrition, told Arutz Sheva that the family finds it impossible to celebrate Independence Day because it comes so quickly after Memorial Day.

“Towards the end of Memorial Day there is a feeling of disrespect for the day because of the overlap,” she said. “We are calling to move Memorial Day and hold it one day earlier. The current situation prevents us from marking Memorial Day with dignity.”
