Public mental health facilities in Israel have been neglected for many years, Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman (UTJ) said Wednesday, responding to a query from MK Shelly Yechimovich (Labor). “I have made many surprise visits, and we saw how horribly [facilities] are upkept. For 17 years we’re waiting… for all those years nothing has been invested in mental health!”
“The reform is not moving forward because each minister has his own agenda,” Litzman continued. “In the meantime, each one ignores his predecessor and it takes two or three years, then there are elections and a new minister comes in, and so it goes.”
Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz recently agreed to earmark 50 million shekels for upgrades to psychiatric hospitals, he added. “It’s welcome news,” he said.
