Lag B'Omer Safety Responsibility at Meron a Question

With less than 10 days to go before the arrival of tens of thousands at Mount Meron in the Galilee for Lag B'Omer observances, the question of responsibility for the safety of the visitors remained a question, after a meeting of the Knesset Interior and Environmental Protection Ministry. The safety question was stressed following the recent fatal accident at Mount Herzl during a rehearsal for Independence Day, but was raised at Meron a year ago, when a grandstand buckled under the weight of thousands of hassidic Jews.

The executive director of the Tourism Ministry told the committee that his office has allocated 1.8 million shekels for safety in Meron and the office dealing with holy sites said it had installed safety features in light of the Mount Herzl tragedy. A police representative said the department had its role to play in seeing people safely to the site, but there was no single authority to oversee the occasion.
