Barak to Offer "Mandatory Service for All" Bill

Defense Minister Ehud Barak will present a bill to the cabinet which will is intended to replace the Tal Law on hareidi military service with a more wide-ranging agreement, at the center of which, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will decide who they enlist, and the rest will be sent to a year of civilian service, including community service. Under the measure, the IDF will gradually compensate those who serve the additional two years at a level comparable to the minimum wage to allow them to study or acquire a skill with which they can enter the labor market.

The legislation would include a limit of 400 draft-age yeshiva students who would be allowed to continue their Torah studies. Barak's office said there was room for adjustments to be made after its first reading in the Knesset, with an eye to increasing the chances of it passing during the summer session.
