Likud Court Blocks Election of New Chief Justice

Chairman Shevach Stern of the Likud National Headquarters, a member of the party's central committee, blocked an attempt, Sunday, by Prime Minister and party chief Binyamin Netanyahu, to have the committee approve his nominee to head the party's court. The court accepted Stern's petition to block the matter coming up at the next committee meeting and to invalidate any vote on the matter that should take place.

Stern's petition said any decision on a party court vote must allow additional candidates to apply and must determine the period for submitting candidacy. He called Netanyahu's attempt a "hijacking", adding, "The raising of such an important matter in opposition to the party by-laws constitutes a serious blow to its proper, democratic running."
