A report Sunday said that the United States was considering changing its policy to Iran's nuclear program – to one of tacit acceptance. The report in the Los Angeles Times said that top U.S. officials are concerned that the “no-tolerance” position the U.S. has adopted on Iran's nuclear program will impede negotiating a settlement that will avoid Iranian development of nuclear weapons. The officials are recommending that the U.S. accept Iranian enrichment of uranium of up to 5%, in exchange for unlimited international supervision of Iranian nuclear facilities.
If the officials have their way, the U.S. will raise the idea with Iran at upcoming discussions planned with Tehran and the six nuclear powers, set to open in Baghdad next month.
