An Israeli Arab couple that fought for the right to live in a Zionist Jewish village has returned an Israeli flag hung on their property. Fatna and Ahmed Zebidat returned the flag to the secretary of the town and expressed upset that someone had put it up without their permission.

“We didn’t throw the flag away or throw it in the garbage,” the two told Haaretz. Despite having decided to live in Rakefet “we are not Zionists,” they added.

The couple fought for six years to be allowed to live in the village. Many small villages in Israel, both Jewish and non-Jewish, are allowed to reject potential residents; however, the Supreme Court agreed with the Zebidats that Rakefet’s standards were discriminatory.
