Regavim Welcomes Police Unit for Negev Building Crime

The Regavim Zionist movement, which monitors illegal construction by Arabs, welcomed, Sunday, news that the Southern District of the Israel Police is working to establish a unit to deal with illegal building by Negev Bedouin. Establishment of the unit followed pressure from Regavim and other organizations, as well as the government's decision to implement the Prawer Committee report on Negev land.

Regavim cited Supreme Court Justice Asher Grunis's recent comment to state prosecutors, during a hearing on a Regavim petition, that it is intolerable that there is only one inspector for an area of two million dunams (500,000 acres). The group added, "We want to hope that the allocation of two hundred and fifty new positions in the Southern District of police will be the first sign to usher in the return of the rule of law to the Wild Negev."
