Soccer Violence Closes Petach Tikva Stadium

Mayor Yitzchak Ohayoun of Petach Tikva ordered the city's Moshava Stadium closed until police return to the soccer fields and security is improved. Similar actions were taken by the mayors of Akko, Be'er Sheva', Haifa, Herzliya, Kiryat Ono, Ma'alot Tarshicha, Ramat Hasharon and Rishon Letzion, following a brawl at the end of the match between Hapoel Ramat Gan and Bnei Lod, Friday afternoon, that resulted in arrests and the cancellation of the rest of the weekend's schedule, only weeks after a brawl involving teams from Petach Tikva and Haifa.

Mayor Itzik Rochberger of Ramat Hasharon resigned from the management of the Israel Football Association, citing its behavior and the helplessness of its disciplinary court in recent years. Recalling the murder of a player in 1975, he said, "The next murder on the soccer field is only a matter of time."
