The oil and natural gas stocks led the way, advancing .45 percent to 1,251.90, followed by the communications and media index, which stood at 594.12, up .43 percent. The financial institutions rose .16 percent to 917.49, the insurance issues standing at 1,045.70, up .15 percent, while the bank stocks advanced .13 percent to 985.80.
