Member of Knesset Aryeh Eldad (National Union) claimed, Monday morning, that police have abandoned the Jews living on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem's Old City, in light of recent events. He said a terrorist went to the Ma'aleh Zeitim neighborhood, Sunday evening, with 10 firebombs and managed to throw seven of them at a ground floor apartment, setting it on fire before security guards who spotted him fired in the air and he escaped. Police came and investigated the guards for shooting in the air.
In a letter to Public Safety Minister Yitzchak Aharonovitch, Professor Eldad demanded that instructions for firing in such situations be made clear, noting that a firebomb is a deadly weapon which demands firing in response. "The worst thing of allwould beif theterrorist who plannedto burn Jews in their sleep would continue his actionswhilethe guardswho dared todefend the lives ofresidentswere to be firedfrom their jobs."
