Egypt over the weekend began sending troops into Sinai in order to assert control over areas where terrorists are operating without fear of authorities. A report in several news outlets Sunday said that Israel was cooperating with Egypt in this campaign, but sources in the defense establishment said that this was incorrect, and that Israel had not given its permission, tacit or otherwise, for Egypt to send troops into Sinai.
The entry of Egyptian troops into Sinai without Israeli permission would be a violation of the Camp David Accords. In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that the campaign was aimed at “restoring Egyptian control over Sinai, and increasing the presence and sovereignty of Egypt in the area.”
