Report: US to Offer 'Last Chance Deal' to Iran

A report in the New York Times over the weekend said that the United States was planning to present a “last chance” plan to Iran. The U.S. will give its overt permission for Iran to engage in a nuclear development system for civilian purposes, if Tehran removes highly enriched uranium from its territory, and dismantles its underground nuclear facilities. If Iran does not accept the offer, far sharper sanctions scheduled for the summer will go into effect, and “further” unspecified steps may be taken.

The Times report quoted U.S. officials as saying that while it was not clear how Iran might respond to the ultimatum, there was a feeling among them that segments of the Iranian regime interested in compromise would pressure the government to accept the deal.
