Lithuania Establishes Holocaust Compensation Fund
The State of Israel welcomed the decision of the Government of Lithuania to establish a compensation fund for the management of Jewish property that was confiscated during World War II. The Foreign Ministry stated that the move "is an important process toward historical justice to the Jewish community of Lithuania which was almost entirely butchered by the Nazis and local collaborators."
Israeli statistics show a large number of Holocaust survivors are elderly and poor and may still own assets in countries occupied by the Nazi regime.
