Beate Klarsfeld Defeated in German Presidential Vote

The German parliament and local legislators elected former East German social activist Joachim Gauck to the mostly ceremonial office of president on Sunday. Gauck received 991 votes, compared to 126 for Nazi-hunter and pro-Israel activist Beate Klarsfeld.

Gauck succeeds Christian Wulff, who resigned, earlier this month, in a corruption scandal.
