New Israel Fund Group To Protest at Yiddish Restaurant

A group called Israel Hofshit (Be Free Israel) , is planning a protest in front of the Jerusalem restaurant Heimeshe Essen. The group is complaining that a kashrut organization is requesting that there be no female waitresses on busy Thursday nights. Heimeshe Essen means "homestyle food" in Yiddish. Located near Jerusalem's Rehavia neighborhood for approximately 40 years, the restuarant serves strictly kosher Ashkenazi style food such as mazta ball soup, cholent, kugel and tzimis for sit down customers and take out.

According to Israel Hofshit's website, the group has "organized protests against gender separation on buses and generated wide media coverage of this problem." The organization recently received a grant from the New Israel Fund.
