C'tee to Consider Mandatory Name Tags for Police

The Knesset Interior and Environmental Protection Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing, Tuesday afternoon, on a bill by Member of Knesset Uri Ariel, prepared by Orit Struck of the Judea and Samaria Human Rights organization, that would require police officers to wear an identification tag. The measure provides for serious punishment, so that it will not be in an officers' interest to remove an ID tag.

The hearing comes about six years after an episode of police violence in the Samarian Jewish community of Amona, next to Ofra, in which violent police officer covered up their identity. Proponents of the bill say about 44 percent of the files have been closed because the identity of the specific officer or officers could not be determined.
