The Knesset Interior and Environmental Protection Committee approved for second and third readings, Monday, a bill to authorize serious punishment for those who aid Palestinian Authority residents who are not authorized to be in other parts of Israel, including providing them with employment and transportation. A number of terror attacks in recent years have been carried out by these illegals.
The bill represents partial acceptance of recommendations by the Ministry of Public Safety, which were intended to turn emergency regulations into more permanent legislation. Among its requirements is one that taxi drivers check the papers of their passengers. Regulations regarding taxi drivers will remain as emergency orders for another two years. A representative of the State Prosecutor's Office said first time offenders are not charged. The measure is expected to come to a Knesset vote soon.
