A Syrian human-rights group reported, Thursday evening, that eight soldiers and seven civilians were killed during the day in battles between troops loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad and anti-Assad rebels in the Kuneitra district village of Jubta Al-Hashav, two kilometers from the Golan Heights border. It's the first time that fighting in the nearly-year-old civil war has come so close to Israel.
The locality of Kuneitra was considered the capital of the Syrian Golan. Israel captured it during the Six Day War and gave it back after the Yom Kippur War. It has been dormant.
