MK Michael Ben-Ari (Ichud Leumi) has proposed a law that would require judges to have completed military or civilian service in order to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Current Supreme Court justices who did not serve in either the IDF or in civilian service would remain on the court, but would not be qualified to serve as president or deputy president of the court.
The bill has been dubbed “Joubran’s Law” after Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran. Joubran caused outrage Tuesday when he refused to sing the national anthem, which extols Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people.
