Rabbi Lau Disappointed and Hurt by TA Shabbat Bus Vote

Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau of Tel Aviv-Yafo expressed "deep disappointment and pain", Tuesday morning, at Monday evening's decision by the Tel Aviv City Council to recommend the operation of public transportation on Shabbat.

The former chief Ashkenazi rabbi of Israel called on Mayor Ron Huldai to back off the decision, noting the thousands of Sabbath-observing Jews that voted for him. He also called on the interior and transportation ministers not to allow "this serious breach" so that Shabbat can continue to be properly maintained in the public domain in Israel.
