Court to Consider Rail Strike; Katz Threatens Shutdown

The Tel Aviv District Labor Court will discuss, Monday morning,I the request by Israel Railways workers and the Histadrut Labor Federation to start a railroad strike over Sunday night's unilateral decision by the railroad to outsource maintenance of the line's 130 new cars to the manufacturer.

The railroad's decision followed a threat by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz to close the line, following fruitless negotiations with the union. Interviewed by Israel Defense Forces Radio, Monday morning, Katz said he didn't want to close the railroad, but would not hesitate do so ""If a sequence of strikes starts and the railroad does not function."
