Giant Machine to Bore Railroad Tunnels

Transportation Minister Israel Katz launched, Monday, the carving of the first railway tunnel in Israel to be carried out by a giant Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)brought especially from abroad. The TBM's first assignment is the 3.6-kilometer/2.35-mile tunnel on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem route between Latrun and Sha'ar Chagai. Additional units will work in tandem on twin tunnels, measuring 11.5 kilometers/7.5 miles each from Nachal Yitleh to Nachal Luz, near Mevasseret Tzion, the longest tunnels in Israel.
