French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned Russia and China for vetoing the UN resolution on Syria on Saturday, after two UN Security Council members, Russia and China vetoed on Saturday a Western-Arab UN Security Council resolution backing an Arab League call for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step aside. The other 13 council members voted in favor of the resolution, which would have said that the council "fully supports" the Arab League plan calling on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and condemn the government's violence. US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice responded that the US was "disgusted" by the outcome of the vote. "For months this council has been held hostage by a couple of members," Rice said. "These members stand behind empty arguments and individual interests while delaying and seeking to strip bare any text that would pressure Assad to change his actions.
