A draft law on a national authority for firefighting will be raised before the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, Sunday. The draft was formulated following a government decision after the Carmel fire disaster to transfer responsibility for firefighting to the Public Security Ministry as of January 2011. According to the draft law, the organization of firefighting will become a national body within a framework of comprehensive reform.
In an interview to be published in Friday's Matzav Haruach (State of Mind), Fire Commissioner Shachar Ayalon said that next year, when the reform is in place, he plans to promote the establishment of a pre-military academy for firefighters. He said that students in the academy will mainly be referred to the air force, which has a big firefighting unit, and to the military's other firefighting facilities. He expressed hope that later, soldiers would be recruited into the firefighting authority as they currently are into the police.
