Committee: Soldiers to Resume Serving as Police

The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee determined, Monday morning, that soldiers may serve in the Israel Police. The decision must be confirmed by the full Knesset.

About two months ago, the committee decided that soldiers would stop serving in the police because of a staffing shortage in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and because of complaints, among others by committee members that the IDF was not a personnel agency for the police. Treasurer Yuval Steinitz and Public Safety Minister Yitzchak Aharonovich wrote individually to Committee Chairman Shaul Mofaz to warn that the decision could significantly harm police operations.
