The cabinet approved, Sunday evening, a bill making education mandatory from the age of three. Implementation of the law will require across-the-board budget cuts by other ministries.
The measure passed by a vote of 21-8 after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met demands posted by the Sephardic hareidi-religious Shas party. Voting against the measure were members of Defense Minister Ehud Barak's Atzma'ut party and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu party.
