With gains ranging from modest to sharp, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange started 2012 with a healthy day of trading on Sunday. The TA composite index finished the day at 981.58, up a percent and a quarter, while the same percentage increase was worth a 1,099.19 close for the Maof 25 most-widely-invested issues, as the TA 100 rose 1.21 percent to 990.37. The 50 mid-cap stocks just outside the TA 100 rose 2.22 percent to 352.01.
Leading the gainers were the oil and natural gas stocks at 1,185.63, up 2.88, followed by the bank issues, which jumped 2.28 percent to 947.03 as the financial institutions finished the day at 886.07, up 1.56 percent, including a .44 percent gain by the insurance companies to 1,037.33. Next came the communications index, which rose 2.16 percent to 772.93. The biomed issues closed at 722.76, up 2.06 percent, with the rest of the technology stocks rising .68 percent to 275.66. The real estate index closed at 270.88, up 1.4 percent.
