Israel's First Female General Proud of IDF Women

The Head of Israeli Defense Force personnel, Major General Orna Barbivai  spoke at a Knesset committee for the Status of Women on women in the IDF. "I'd hate to think I got my appointment just for being a woman," Maj. Gen. Barbivai said. She is the first woman to be made Aluf, the IDF's second highest rank. She stated that one in two Israeli women do not serve in the IDF, mostly on religious grounds. She further noted that currently 92 percent of the positions in the IDF are also open to women.

Many religious women opt for Sherut Leumi, or national service an alternative to the IDF in which participants volunteer for social service jobs.
