For the first time, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas sat with Hamas politburo leader Khaled Mashaal and Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shalah in a meeting of the PA's "temporary leadership", Thursday in Cairo. Also in attendance were members of the Palestine Liberation Organization's executive committee and other organizations, as well as Egyptian intelligence chief Murad Muwafi.
During the meeting, it was announced that Abbas has ordered the formation of an elections committee responsible for elections among PA Arabs living within its confines and abroad. The parties agreed not to talk to Israel as long as "settlement activity" continues. They also agreed to continue efforts for United Nations recognition as a sovereign state and to activate a "people's intifada".
