Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said Monday that the Carmel forest fire had caught Israel off guard and unprepared, without a method of dealing with a major conflagration. Rivlin was speaking at an official memorial ceremony for the victims of the Carmel fire last year.
Speaking to families of the victims of the blaze, Rivlin said “I know that the pain and feeling of unfair loss burns within you, but I know that you are not seeking revenge, but justice. You are seeking to chop off heads indiscriminately, but for a repair of the problem. We will not fulfill our obligations to our loved ones if we simply search for people to blame and hang in the public square,” Rivlin said, adding that reforming the system and correcting its faults was the required and desired outcome of the tragedy.
