The Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, met Monday with Gilad Shalit at his family's home in Mitzpeh Hila in northern Israel. Visiting Shalit along with the mayor were the President of the Jewish Community of Rome, Riccardo Pacifici and by Italian Ambassador to Israel Luigi Mattiolo. Alemanno, along with Pacifici, had been active in efforts to free Shalit during the five years of his captivity by Hamas terrorists, and in 2009 bestowed upon Shalit honorary Roman citizenship. The Rome municipality turned off the lights of the Colosseum in 2010 to mark Shalit's fourth year as a prisoner.
Alemanno said that the meeting had gone very well and that he was inspired by Shalit's efforts to survive the years of imprisonment by terrorists. “Gilad Shalit deserves a Nobel peace prize,” he said.
