Finance Min: Histadrut Must 'Act Responsibly'

The Finance Ministry on Sunday asked the Histadrut to “show responsibility” and avoid calling a general strike over the issue of contract workers. A spokesperson for the Ministry said that the government was prepared to discuss improving the lot of contract workers who do not receive benefits,  but that “in light of the recent developments in the financial world and the forecasts for a slowdown in Israel's economy, the Histadrut must show responsibility for the future of the economy.”

The Histadrut said Sunday it would go to court to seek permission to resume work actions over the government's refusal to negotiate seriously, it contends, over the issue of contract workers. Last month the Histadrut conducted a half-day strike demanding that contract workers in government offices be given regular, full-time contract with benefits.
