MK Roni Bar-On (Kadima) on Monday called the Israel Electric Company “insensitive to the needs of Israelis” who have demonstrated against high prices and complained that they cannot afford the cost of living. Bar-on said that consumers were angry and nearing the “boiling point” with the company, which constantly threatens that it will have to cut back on power unless it is awarded high rate increases. The comments came during a discussion of the Knesset Control Committee which examined the IEC's plans for national emergencies, and how the company was making use of alternative energy.
Several weeks ago, the IEC requested close to a 20% rate hike, to come into effect next year. Electricity prices went up about 10% last August.
