A preliminary look into Wednesday's artillery mishap at the Tze'elim military base - in which shells landed near Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and other senior commanders - indicates the crew operating the artillery did not follow proper procedure.
According to the report, presented to Ground-Forces Commander Shlomo Turgeman, the crew discovered a technical malfunction during the course of the reserves exercise. While the commander of the crew ceased fire to repair the aim of the piece, he did not follow safety instructions to make sure the repair had been made as it was supposed to. As a result, the crew aimed and fired again without the repair being complete, resulting in the 1,200 meter deviation from the target that endangered the lives of the commanders. The investigation continues.
