      Knesset Hearing on Illegal Aliens

The Knesset held a hearing on the issue of illegal aliens entering Israel from the border with Egypt. The proposal, desscibed as urgent, as initiated by Members of Knesset Ya'akov Edri (Kadima),  Nissim Zeev (Shas), Yaakov Katz (National Union) and Yisrael Meir Uri Maklev (United Torah Judaism).

The majority of immigrants are from Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia.

Interior Minister Eli Yishai apologized for his absence at the meeting and later stated, "When I said it [illegal immigration] was an existential threat to Israel, they said I was racist. As interior minister, I began to lead discussions and to build the border fence. But the fence is not enough," said Yishai.
