A second frog of a species that was thought extinct – the Black-Bellied Disc-Tongued Frog (Discoglossus nigriventer) – has been discovered in the Huleh Valley in northern Israel. This particular species was found only in the Huleh Valley, and disappeared as the valley – formerly a swamp – was drained. It was declared extinct in the late 1950s. This is the second frog of the species found this year.
Little is known about the Black-Bellied Disc-Tongued Frog, one of the rarest frogs in the world. Only several have been captured alive. A Nature Authority official said that the young frog would be released back into the wild.
