Tantawi: Pressure on Army Will Not be Tolerated

In a press conference Sunday, top Egyptian army official Hussein Tantawi said that he would not allow anyone to put pressure on the army, which alone would supervise and ensure a smooth transition to civilian rule after Egypt's elections Monday. Tantawi was responding to ongoing demonstrations demanding that the country's military government be disbanded immediately to allow a civilian government to rule.

During the press conference, Tantawi asked leading politicians Mohamed ElBaradei and Amr Moussa to support newly appointed prime minister Kamal El-Ganzouri. The appointment has proven very unpopular among protesters in Tahrir Square.
