Meretz Bill: Public Transportation on Shabbat

Members of Knesset from the left wing Meretz party submitted a bill to the Knesset on Thursday, demanding public transportation on Shabbat, when it is forbidden by Jewish law. Under the proposal, buses, trains and taxis would operate, although the some lines within cities would be an exception, under agreement from the justice minister, transportation minister and a majority of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.

Under current law, bus companies are not allowed to operate on Shabbat, with exceptions, notably in the non-Jewish sector.
