Barak: Stop Law to Vet Judges

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday criticized a proposal by MKs Ze'ev Elkin and Yariv Levin that would require candidate for the High Court to appear before the Knesset Constitutional Committee and the Knesset Law and Justice Committee. Barak, chairman of coalition partner Atzma'ut, said that “we are witness to an attempt to legislate against the High Court and the independence of judges. We in Atzma'ut believe that we must defend the independence of judges and we will do everything we can to ensure that this law is not brought before the Knesset for a vote.

“Any intervention by the political arm of government in the affairs of the High Court weakens the court,” Barak added.
