High-Tech to Teaching Program to Close

The Education Ministry plans to shut down a program that retrained high-tech professionals and others as teachers, after finding that many of the new teachers chose to leave the profession. The drop-out rate was roughly 50%, ministry officials found.

The ministry had hoped to both assist high-tech professionals struggling to find a suitable job, and make up a shortage of teachers qualified to teach math and science. Critics of the program said it was doomed to failure as long as teachers are not provided better incentives, including higher salaries.
