NATO Chief: No Plans to Get Involved in Syria

On a surprise visit to Tripoli on the eve of the end of the organization's mission in Libya, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that there were no plans to get involved in the situation in Syria at this time. Responding to a reporter's question about the possibility of NATO instituting a no-fly zone in Syria, Rasmussen said that “it's totally ruled out. We have no intention whatsoever to intervene in Syria.”

Activists in Syria fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad had been hopeful that NATO would step in to at least calm the situation in the country, if not to remove Assad altogether.
